Testing at USC

COVID-19 Testing

There are two types of testing being conducted through USC Student Health:

Exposed / Symptomatic Individuals

Nasopharyngeal swab testing for exposed (had close contact, within 6 ft., for a combined total of 15 minutes or longer within a 24-hour period) or symptomatic (has any combination of symptoms) individuals.

  • These are conducted at the Engemann Plaza ONLY.
  • Health care staff in these testing tents are in full PPE.
  • This is for any USC student, and any USC employee who has been approved for essential work on campus.
  • These test results are generally returning within 24 hours, for clinical diagnosis and contact tracing purposes.
  • Scheduling is required, please call 213-740-9355 (WELL) or log in to usc.edu/myshr.

Surveillance Testing for Asymptomatic Individuals

Pop Testing (by external company, Color). This is for asymptomatic individuals—do not use this program if you are ill or have been informed you have been exposed to COVID-19 (had close contact, within 6 ft., for a combined total of 15 minutes or longer within a 24-hour period). This testing program can provide pre-clearance for activities, or “post activity” where risk might be elevated (such as being in a gathering, or returning from travel).

  • This is for any USC student, and any USC employee who has been approved for essential work on campus.
  • USC students living in USC Housing are currently required to test weekly; USC students living in private residences near the campuses are encouraged to test frequently.
  • Employee lists are submitted by divisions and schools with their HR partners, USC Student Health is submitting approved division-wide, or school-wide, rosters of employees to Color for invitations to schedule. HR partners: please download and complete this roster form, and return to covid19@usc.edu.
  • These tests are at multiple locations on both campuses. Scheduling in advance is recommended.
  • Because this should be for general population only, health care staff in these testing tents are NOT in full PPE.
  • Upon receiving a roster, employees on the roster will be added to the Color database and receive an invitation to schedule a test.
  • These tests results return within 72 hours.

Note for remote employees: Employees who are NOT working at USC facilities (working remotely) and develop symptoms are advised to contact their regular health provider. If employees need a COVID-19 clearance for personal reasons, they are able to access Pop Testing as a standby and can be manually added to the system. These employees should be prepared to provide their 10-digit USC ID number, date of birth, and USC email address.

Note for individuals who have recovered from COVID-19: Individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 should not be tested within 90 days of their original positive test, as results may not accurately reflect their current health status.
